Russ Emo Bio – Ontario Business Insurance Broker
Second Generation Insurance
Insurance has always been a part of my life. My father served as Vice President of Pafco Insurance and eventually to VP of Allstate of Canada. After his first retirement, he was offered a position as Consultant to Echelon General where he served for 5 years. That’s where I got my first real submersion into the insurance industry.
While working as a consultant for the revamping of Echelon, my father approached me to start in the underwriting department. I started on the ground floor in the processing department and after many months, worked my way to becoming an auto insurance underwriter. As the company grew, so did the opportunities. I always showed initiative to achieve more and the company knew that. I was promoted to senior underwriter and took on the responsibility as the head commercial auto underwriter. The department grew and I was asked to mentor and train other underwriters.
Corporate Side of Speciality Insurance
Echelon then took a large step into the motorcycle insurance business. I was asked to not only head up this department, but also to write, oversee, and facilitate the entire program. The company continued to grow, and I was asked once again to help develop and facilitate more of Echelon’s specialty insurance programs including Trailer and Motorhome insurance and their classic car program. I was a part of the attempt by Echelon to launch Hagerty Insurance into the Canadian market and visited Travers City Michigan.
Unfortunately for me, the company grew so much that they required larger facilities to accommodate the growing staff and the commute was too great. Because of my locale, and because there were no major insurance companies in the area, I transferred from the corporate world to the broker side.
I enjoyed my newly found position as an insurance broker, and I thoroughly enjoy assisting individuals and their needs. I feel a sense of accomplishment knowing that my clients are protected so that we can both sleep well at night. I’ve always strived to educate my clients with their insurance needs, to the point I had a local TV show on Rogers Cable called The Insurance Help Desk.
Ontario Areas Serviced
I have been serving the people of Dufferin, Caledon, Peel, Simcoe, Bruce and Wellington Counties as well as other parts of Ontario for over 10 years as an insurance broker and serviced all of Alberta, Yukon, and Ontario as an underwriter for 8 years.
To better serve my clients I felt that I needed to increase my insurance knowledge on a more formal level. I started working on my Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designation. This is an intense 4-part course that covers a large spectrum of insurance knowledge in both Personal and Commercial insurance. After 2 years I completed the CAIB designation and encourage others to do the same.
Serving Small Businesses
My focus is now to assist Ontario businesses, especially the small businesses trying to be successful in today’s highly contested markets. With the large chain and box stores, it is more and more difficult for the mom and pop business to survive. Every penny earned is a difficult one; I know because I once owned a restaurant.
My goal is to assist in giving Ontario small businesses the best business insurance coverage possible at a reasonable rate. The only way to do this is to not just be an insurance broker, but also an insurance advisor and a partner, someone they can trust. That’s my goal!
Business & Management Experience
I have served in many capacities throughout my life. I started as an apprentice plumber servicing clients. I then took the trade and became part of new building projects. I then started my own restaurant business and eventually became an Assistant General Manager of a restaurant chain. This business experience has helped me understand many types of businesses and operations, which gives me an advantage over other insurance brokers.
One business to me that is highly overlooked is the Canadian Farmer. Over the last 15-years, my family and I have been attending the annual Dufferin Farm Tour, which takes you to 5 different farms in the Dufferin county area. This has given me a very personable look into the day-to-day life of the Ontario farmer and how important farm insurance truly is. These farmers are the people that put food on our table, and with the changing weather patterns and markets, they are doing everything in their power to continue to feed both you and me.
