10 Top Stolen Vehicles

Ontario’s 10 Top Stolen Vehicles: Is your car on the list?

If you own an older model Chevrolet/GMC Suburban, Silverado, or Tahoe, your car could be among the list of the top 10 stolen vehicles in Ontario.

In 2018, overall vehicle theft increased by 8% in Canada while the province of Ontario saw a 15% increase in car theft. Ford F-series trucks and luxury SUV’s are among the most stolen cars in Canada.

There are various factors that influence which vehicles criminals target most. The four main reasons for vehicle theft include:

  1. Car Resale Value Abroad
Vehicles are often stolen for the purpose of being resold overseas at exponentially higher prices. Most stolen cars appear to be leaving through ports in Montreal and Halifax. The oversees destinations for these stolen vehicles include Africa, the Middle East, and to some extent, various Caribbean countries. Vehicles stolen for their resale value can be quickly moved out of the country, oftentimes with their vehicle identification numbers (VIN numbers) still intact.
  1. Resale to Unsuspecting Consumers
Sometime cars stolen in Ontario are taken exclusively for the purpose of resale to unsuspecting Canadians. These vehicles will be resold with fake VIN numbers or quite often, sold for their car parts.
  1. Theft of Vehicle for Joyriding
Many stolen vehicles in Ontario are occasionally taken simply for the purposes of joyriding and/or to get somewhere. Few of the perpetrators realize that vehicle theft is a major crime with a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
  1. Aiding Other Criminal Activity
Criminals will also steal vehicles in Ontario to help them commit other crimes. These stolen automobiles are usually trashed and abandoned. Most stolen vehicles for these purposes are found within 48 hours of the original car theft.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC)  represents 90% of Canada’s property and casualty insurance market. The IBC publishes a list of the top 10 stolen vehicles in Canada as well as for each individual province. In 2018, the ICB list of the top 10 stolen vehicles in Ontario included the following:

  • 2002 Chevrolet/GMC Suburban/Yukon XL 1500 4DR 4WD
